Works on the Free plan: 15 diagram nodes + 150 notes, text, stickers & mind map topics per diagram.
A KWL chart helps learners organise a topic in three columns: what they already know, what they want to know, and what they learned. This template opens a KWL board with two sample notes per column, built around how plants use sunlight, so students see the method before they use it on their own topic.
Students add one idea per note, which makes it easy to move a question from want to learned once it is answered. The board grows as the class adds notes, and because it is a diagram rather than a worksheet, the teacher can share it with a link and come back to it at the end of the unit.
When to use it
- Starting a new unit or topic with a class.
- Activating prior knowledge before a reading or an experiment.
- Tracking open questions during a research project.
- Reviewing what a group learned at the end of a lesson or a course.
How to use it
Write the topic in the board title and replace the sample notes with the class’s own ideas.
Fill the know column first, then collect questions in the want column, one per note.
As the unit goes on, move answered questions or add new notes to the learned column.
Share the board link with the class, and compare the first and last versions with revision snapshots.
Questions
Can students open the KWL chart from home?
Yes. Share the board with a link so students can open it from anywhere and watch it update live. Editing together needs a seat for each editor, so on the Free plan the teacher edits while the class follows along.
Does the KWL board work for other subjects?
Yes. Rename the title, replace the sample notes, and keep the three columns. The Boards pack also has a pros and cons board and custom columns for other classroom activities.
